Winter trails to explore in the Northwoods of Wisconsin

Ready to get out and play in the Northwoods this winter? Here’s a look at a few trails you can explore when the snow flies—all you need is a warm pair of boots, cross-country skis, or snowshoes.

Ice Age Trail – Lincoln & Langlade counties

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail spans more than 1,000 miles through Wisconsin, following the path of the last glaciers to pass through the state. In the Northwoods, it passes through scenic terrain in Lincoln and Langlade counties, offering outstanding opportunities for recreation year-round. In the winter, the trail is open to hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

Bearskin State Trail – Oneida County

Follow the path of a former railroad line on this scenic trail that spans more than 20 miles between Minocqua and Tomahawk. The trail is popular among hikers and bikers in the warmer months, and in winter, it’s open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers. However, the trail is not groomed and part of it is shared with snowmobilers.

Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest – Oneida & Iron counties

This massive, 236,000-acre forest is spread across three counties in the Northwoods and is a popular recreation destination all year long. In winter, cross-country skiers can explore four tracked cross-country trails: Escanaba, Madeline, McNaughton, and Raven. Snowshoers and skiers can explore the Lumberjack and Powell trails, and parking lots at the Fallison, North Trout, and Star Lake Nature Trails are kept plowed throughout the winter.

Otter Springs Trail – Forest County

Located 3 miles east of Crandon on Forest Road 2378, this mountain bike trail system is open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers in the winter. There’s a 1.25-mile loop or a 0.75-mile loop that’s more suitable for beginners. All trails are groomed and tracked for cross-country skiing, and the trail system also has a parking area and shelter.

MECCA Trail System – Iron County

This cross-country ski and snowshoe trail system in Mercer has been welcoming winter sports enthusiasts for nearly 50 years. The area features 13 miles of cross-country ski trails that are tracked for classic skiers and include a groomed skate lane. There are also nearly 4 miles of dedicated snowshoeing trails. Parking areas can be found at the Little Turtle Flowage and the Chalet on Fierick Road.
